As South Africa is perhaps best known for its abundance of wildlife, a safari into the African bush in order to get acquainted with our Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – usually features high on the must-do list.
A safari wedding in a game reserve (or elsewhere in the South African bush) is a romantic option which offers untold adventure and excitement for the wedding party.
South Africa offers much in the way of safari luxury and has many exclusive game reserves. You can choose to go off the beaten track, or remain close to civilization, but still emerse yourself in the beauty and variety of South African wildlife.
If a safari wedding is what you are planning, we recommend you check whether you need to take malaria tablets in the region you will be visiting.
When booking the venue for your safari wedding, whether it’s a luxury game reserve or one of the many hotels which cater for tourists on safari, ask if they are able to assist you with finding recommended service providers for your wedding.
This is especially important if you need the services of a Marriage Officer (or a make-up artist and hairdresser), as there might not be anyone suitable in the area and you may have to include their travelling costs in your budget.
If you are planning a safari honeymoon, remember to pack clothes in neutral colours – brown beige or khaki – for game drives. In a malaria region, avoid wearing perfume or after-shave and wear long sleeves and long trousers at night. Some game reserves (such as those in the Western Cape) are malaria free.
